When was the last time we saw Lalettan as a down to earth family person — a caring husband and loving father? Of course, last year's Telugu blockbuster, Janatha Garage is one, but I would consider it as the latest in the list inspired from 1972 classic - The Godfather. So it was in Drishyam (2013) which re wrote most of the collection records in Malayalam cinema that we saw Mohanlal as a family man — a role which he plays with ease and excels like any other. Mohanlal always plays it safe with directors — we don't frequently see him associating with debutants or relatively newcomers and this is one factor which differentiates the two big Ms of Malayalam cinema. So when the film was announced with Jibu Jacob as the director whose debut film Vellimoonga was a surprise hit at the box office along with M Sindhuraj as the script writer, I had my doubts — 75% of which went wrong as I walked out of the hall after watching the film. Based on a short story Pranayopinashath by V J James, MVT narrates the tale of Panchayat Secretary Ulahanan played by Mohanlal and his wife Annie played by Meena. The screenplay captures various moments in their lives, mostly at the Panchayat office and the housing colony. Ulahanan is a middle-aged government employee, a man quite used to the boredom of middle age and his life is about home and office. Mohanlal plays this portion extremely well, with an annoyed face, salt and pepper hairstyle and a stubble. Anoop Menon, Alencier Ley Lopez, and Kalabhavan Shajohn play the roles of Ulahanan's neighbor's cum friends. The film after establishing the characters takes a turn when Ulahanan attends a college reunion, where he realizes its the absence of love and passion that's making his life boring. The flirt Venukuttan, played by Anoop Menon advises Ulahanan to get a girlfriend and Neha Saxena's Julie is introduced. Thanks to the script writer and director, the voluptuous Julie doesn't have that much of a screen time and the role is like an extended cameo. The character, however, is important in the screenplay as Julie is the reason for Ulahanan to realize that his LIFE is his WIFE which is the film's tag line — My Life is My Wife. The middle- age romance between Ulahanan and Annie is beautiful though their reconciliation scenes was a bit melodramatic and dialogue clichéd which were booed by the audience. This forms the crux of the story and we are presented with various cute moments from their lives along with sub plots and a convincing climax. The film was actually set for a Christmas release, however, was delayed by the theater strike in Kerala. Among the cast, other than Mohanlal, Meena impresses again. She once again proves that, among the contemporary actors, she is the best leading lady for Mohanlal. She is one of those rare actresses who gets/chooses script backed, performance oriented entertainers even after the comeback. Their combination is great and the same magic which we saw in Drishyam is more or less present here too, with Meena getting more screen time. Manju Warrier too would have excelled in this role, I guess. Aima and Sanoop play their kids. Aima does a decent job, especially at the climax while Sanoop has nothing great to do. Anoop Menon is a talent wasted. Venukuttan is a role that can be easily played by someone like Aju Varghese or so. Sharafuddin who plays the office assistant Reji, Suraj Venjaramoodu who plays the President, Sudheer Karamana who plays Chalakan all makes into the list of underutilized talents. I was glad to see Bindu Panicker on screen after a pretty long gap. Malayalam cinema is always known for its content and this film is no different. On the technical side, cinematography by Pramod K Pillai and editing by E S Sooraj is okay, nothing extra ordinary there. Music of this film is a big let down as none of the music directors — Bijipal nor M Jayachandran has offered a hum-worthy/catchy song. The visualizations of the songs, however, make up for the shortcoming as the audience is kept engaged to an extend. Bijipal's BGM was, however, satisfactory. I was not a fan of M Sindhuraj as a scriptwriter and this film doesn't prove me wrong. Many of the dialogues were clichéd and scenes unwanted. The film needs a bit of trimming here and there. MVT is typical Sathyan Anthikad type film — no suspense, twists or surprises, yet we are kept engaged till the end. The biggest positive of the film is that it doesn't get preachy anywhere, though there were ample moments for that in the film. The story line is highly predictable though the climax was a good one. The topics of extra marital affairs, teenage infatuations, and frictions in the marriage have been told and tested before and its the presentation and the lea pair's extraordinary chemistry that did the job here. Yet there were some highly melodramatic scenes and clichéd dialogues which were welcomed with boos by the audience and I seriously feel its time to say good bye to those sentimental scenes as not even a single scene are left without being booed. And not to miss the ending sequence where Mohanlal quotes the Bible, a quote remembered by the Malayalam audience for the great storyteller Padmarajan and his classic Namukku Parkan Munthirithoppukal. Also, it's not quite common to see novel or short story adaptations in Malayalam and the very latest one which I can recollect is Ranjith's Leela which was, of course, not made for the common audience. To conclude, after the thrilling Oppam and high voltage Pulimurugan, Mohanlal had made the right choice of Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol

The Bye Bye Man (2017)

The Bye Bye Man (2017)

This garbage is a prime example of how an already flawed horror movie concept can be made even worse with studio intervention and money whoring. It's obvious that the studio had no faith in the team producing this and wanted to hedge its bet by making it a PG-13 title instead of giving it a chance with an R. I'm sure we've all seen movies that are "so bad they're good," but in the instance of The Bye Bye Man, it's so bad it makes me want to gouge my eyes out and castrate myself. This movie is a money grubbing whore of a garbage fire. It's the real reason for children developing cancer.

Whomever allowed some of these edits to make it to the big screen should never be allowed to work in the industry again, and neither should the young lead actress. She probably meant well, but she apparently is incapable of expressing any emotion with her entire face. It's almost as if someone repeatedly beat her in the head with a brick until she literally turned into one. Some of the shameless attempts to hide the gore and blood, to allow for a PG-13 rating, are so bad that it would have been better if they had simply edited in stock footage of animals hurling themselves off a cliff to their death. A better title for this "movie" would have been "Shameful Money Grab Man."

I feel bad for Carrie-Anne Moss, although she should know better by now about projects like this. The scariest part about this project was the fact that it was allowed to be made at all. Absolutely everyone involved in this project should feel ashamed of themselves.

Dear Zindagi (2016)

Let me get this straight this is one of the best movies of year..

If an actor is making commercial movies more often than there comes a time in his life when audience get sick of his usual attitude towards selection of script. Then the actor starts to realize that now time has come to let everyone know that he got some acting skills. This was the situation of Shah Rukh Khan. His last few movies were all commercial with Fan being an exception. It was his time to return and shut all of his critics. But man o man how did he comeback.Truly sensational.

Now let's get back to movie.

Preview(No spoilers): Movie is about a girl who is desperate who is fighting all the hardships of life. Her on again off again love life until she meets this middle aged psychiatrist Jehangir which teaches her how to be free, how to say no to life, how to live it in your own way.

Direction:As everybody here knows that movie's director is Gauri Shinde. She debuted with English Vinglish which was both commercial and critical success. This is Gauri's second directorial venture and she totally nailed it.Movie is almost as flawless as it gets.I rarely found a glitch in it.Indeed the movie shows her hard work.

Acting:As movie's mainly focused on Alia Bhatt's character so let's first discuss her. She gives her truly best and her character was brought to life by her.She is god gifted and has a lot of talent. This girl will surely go a long way in her career. And then there is Shah Rukh Khan.I actually watched this movie because of him.Earlier this year his Fan was released. The movie didn't do well on Box Office but was a really great movie and SRK nailed both the characters.Like Fan he was the main highlight of the Dear Zindagi too.His sarcasm his cuteness and above all his acting in this movie is absolutely out of the world. As he faced a lot of criticism for Dilwal,Happy New Year,Chennai Express etc but now he is back to shut all of his critics.

Cinematography:Movie does well in this section too.It was interesting how the story progressed with time.

Story:Story is as simple as it gets and yet very complicated. It was very thought provoking. It changes the way you look at your life at your destiny.Story is pure work of class and hard work put in by Gauri Shinde.

Overall:Overall the movie is very likable.Even hours later of watching it it stayed on top of my mind.

Pros:+Shah Rukh back to his best.

+Great and flawless story.

+Cinematography

+All the hard work put in by whole team

Cons:None that I can find.

At the end I strongly recommend it to everyone to go and watch this movie. Its one in a million type of movie.Don't miss it

Ragini MMS 2

Ragini MMS 2

The movie aspires to be "Horrex" (combination of horror and sex). There is even a dialog in the movie stating this aspiration. However, it fails to deliver either horror or sex.

I like Karenjit Kaur Vohra AKA Sunny Leone but not the kind of porn she does. You know, screaming, making faces, fake demeanor and all that. Had started to watch one of her porn movies out of curiosity but stopped it midway. But most other men like it. If you are one of those, chances are that you may feel a bit titillated in some scenes. There's even kiss shot between her and Sandhya Mridul as a mock-up of her lesbian porn-scenes. However, after having watched her hardcore porn, these 2-3 abrupt, censored, scaled-down-on-sexuality, fit-for-mainstream-movie scenes may not satiate you like you expect to.

The horror part is ludicrous, to say the least. The kind of horror nuggets you've been watching in movies since the beginning of time have been very badly mashed up. Mashed up with deafening sound in the background. The makers thought the louder and the more jarring the sound, the more scared the audience would be. Stupid thought.

As usual, Sunny Leone has played herself - porn-star turned mainstream actress. Even her name is Sunny Leone in the movie. In one scene, she even tries to justify her porn career by spoofing a porn act. I would like to see her in hot, glamorous roles indeed but not playing a porn-star. Enough of it.

Saahil Prem tries hard to look the macho, silent type. Ends up looking and acting constipated.

Divya Dutta didn't have much to perform.

Everyone else, who had some "comedy" to do, overacts; be it Parvin Dabas or Karan Mehra or Sandhya Mridul. I don't blame it on them, I blame it on the director who must have asked it from them to make them look funny. Most of the time, they look irritating instead. Sandhya Mridul is one of the finest actresses and she did act really well, given the scope and the director. Plus she looks sexy at 45 playing a young actress! Kudos!

Just like the first part, there is mispronounced and incomplete Hanuman Chaalisa that runs with the titles. And to drive away the evil spirit, Divya Dutta recites a sacred stotra very improperly and the evil spirit is shown mimicking it in a ridiculing way. Being a Hindu and a Hanuman devotee, I didn't like that. However, I won't demand a ban on the movie or vandalize the theaters. :)

If you like Baby Doll song, as I do, and are planning to watch the movie just for it, watch the song on Youtube instead. There are two very slightly different versions there, one little bit bolder than the other.

If you want scary entertainment, you can watch a good and real horror movie, if you want sexual thrill, you can watch explicit porn of Sunny Leone. Most people in the movie were there for the "let's see a porn-star do another mainstream movie" amusement-factor. You may watch it for the same reason. There's no other good reason I can think of.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

With all the rumours flying about that Disney had interfered with the creative process on this one, just as when Alderaan blew up - I feared the worse. Fortunately my fears were unfounded.

Rogue one is as engrossing as it is seamless and while its not perfect it had everything required to make a great movie. I guess everyone has different expectations of Star Wars. The plot which I will only briefly describe involves a group of rebels attempting to secure the plans to the Death Star, the designer of which, having a morale conscience, built the deliberate flaw (The exhaust port which Stewie Darth Vader asked about in Family Guy) so that it could be easily destroyed as long as the information fell into the right hands. This information is contained in an archive and it falls to the daughter of the designer, Jyn Erso, to not only restore her fathers name but get the designs to the rebels who are just itching to get on with events in Episode Four (New Hope) and blow the thing up.

So does it hold up? Well, yes, not only does it hold up I would put this film on par with Empire and also Episode IV and this coming from someone who saw the first film on the silver screen in 1977. Gareth Edwards is a director who understands all the combined elements that make a Star Wars Film great. First a good script with the right mix of drama, action, pathos and humour and above all a story that actually makes sense, secondly good well written, rounded, characters that are interesting, diverse and unique, third great visuals - there's so many memorable shots in this film and so many of them are the shots you always wanted to see, fourth well directed action that looks and feels real, that is tense and that you can follow, fifth - tension, this film has it in spades, Sixth nods and references to the original trilogy - they come in abundance, some are comedic, some pure nostalgia while others are entirely appropriate and work so well within the story. Seventh - real sets, please give me a London Underground station redressed over bland CGI sterile sets any day of the week. Here the technology enhances the story and the tension and at no time tries to substitute for either. It is the perfect mix of live action & CG effects. I have not seen them so well combined since Lord of the Rings.

This is a man who clearly understands his craft of what makes for a great film. I was highly critical of the prequel movies, which really are a masterclass in how not to make a film, here the total opposite is true. I am not a die hard Star Wars fan in any sense and was fully prepared to be very critical of this film, but find it hard to find fault in it anywhere. The supporting cast were especially good here, everyone from Riz Ahmed to Forest Whitaker giving it their all. The new villain of the piece is brilliantly played by Ben Mendelson (Hard to believe this is the kid from The Big Steal!) Donnie Yen's character was beautifully written, I could have watched another movie just about him alone. The cast feels truly international, as any universe should. Many British actors really make their mark in smaller roles including Duncan Pow & Ben Daniels as Rebel Foot Solider and General Pilot respectively while the likes of Sharon Duncan-Brewster & Jonathon Aris as Rebel Senators argue the merits of the attack in a tense conference debate - gone are the boring council meetings of the prequels. Strong drama is the key ingredient of the day. Here the Rebellion is shown as a far more tangible real faction, not everyone agrees with each other, things get messy and sometimes the wrong people are killed - the film even begs to ask the question, how better really are they than the Empire??? - we know of course, but its great to see such shades rather than just plain good and bad guys.

The film contains so many pure Star Wars moments. I have no doubt the Droid (Voiced with skill by Alan Tudky) will become a favourite of many and new aliens and ship designs are not thin on the ground.

Chiefly in the acting credits, plaudits must go to Felicity Jones who plays Jyn with real conviction while Diego Luna avoids a Han Solo portrayal of Cassian, her would be ally and sometimes adversary. The appearances of Vader and Tarkin (Incredible) are entirely warranted and in proportion with the rest of the film.

One or two of the subplot characters are a little underwritten (perhaps deleted scenes and a longer cut will reveal them to be less so) but that really is nit picking, I had no issue with this at all. To juggle so many major and minor characters in a single narrative in a tight running time, for any director is no mean feat and Edwards manages it extremely well.

I have no doubt Edwards had to steer an entire army of Executives in order to deliver the film he wanted. Perhaps one day someone will make a film about that? I have no doubt it would make for quite a story - Whatever were his obstacles, he clearly overcame them. He has done himself and every Star Wars fan proud. Pure class.

One Night Stand 2016 DvD HDRip x264 Full Movie Download FilmyWap

A hot-shot event manager has a one night stand with a beautiful stranger. No spoilers there, because the plot point is inherent in the film's title: can't get more explicatory than that, can it? It's when the roll in the hay is done and dusted, and both parties return to terra ferma, that this film starts getting a little interesting. Both Urvil (Tanuj Virwani) and the woman who calls herself Celina (Sunny Leone) realise that a little bit of unthinking lust can cause, um, complications.

That he, self-confessed Casanova who is always adding another notch on his well-shucked belt, can't get her out of his head, and she, mysterious lady of the night, can't be bothered, is the cool curve the film throws out. But it is unable to build on it, remaining yet another stab at a 'desi' 'Fatal Attraction, saddled with an inept plot and shallow acts. Why should boys have all the fun, why can't girls too? Why not indeed? Good question, and amply answered by all the heavings and writhings, but, and this is the thing, they are surprisingly tame. Ms Leone's vaunted past as an adult entertainer, the sole reason why you presume this film has been made, have been successfully and sadly tamped by Bollywood. Where's the heat?Sunny Leone is picture perfect, managing a couple of felt expressions in only a few scenes. Even her bump and grind is same old: this 'duniya' is still 'pittal di' ; where's the gold? She will need to seriously up her act overall, and delivering dialogue is part of it, to be able to call herself an actress. Right now, she is gorgeous to look at, but we know that already, and struggling to emote, which has been her bugbear in her last few outings as well. The only person with any acting cred here is Ninad Kamat, who lifts the film whenever he is on.

For a film which wants to strike a blow for feminism and sexual freedom, there are some troubling misogynistic touches about 'hot' secretaries, and 'stay-at-home' wives. Careful, your slip is showing.

OK Jaanu (2017)

The trend of making remakes is very hot right now in Hollywood. Some of them are good, some of them are average and many fail but if you look closely you'll see one common thing. All the movies are remakes of very old movies. Now if you apply common sense, you'll ask that why do film-makers remake old movies, right? Because they think they can improve upon the originals because of the technical advancements we have achieved throughout the years. Now see what the Hindi Film Industry does. They remake a movie which was made one year ago. I'll try to elaborate this throughout the review.

SCREENPLAY/STORY - OK Jaanu is a remake of the Tamil movie O Kadhal Kanmani(2015). I had seen the movie then because there was a major uproar about it because it was Mani Ratnam's movie. The story follows Adi and Tara who fall in love, live together in an elderly couple's house. The elderly couple is portrayed by Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson. On observing their unconditional love, Adi and Tara understand the gravity of their relation and eventually give in to their love- wala feelings. That's it. It was an average story then and 2 years later it is still an average story, but this is bogged down by the extremely bland dialogue and exposition. It almost felt like in the screenplay where there should have been one full-stop, there there were two full-stops. Due to that the conversations were missing a beat every-time. It seemed very artificial. I maybe nitpicking but this keeps happening throughout the entire length of the movie. Now as Naseeruddin Shah is a veteran actor, he makes the dialogue sound real but it sticks out like a sore thumb every time there is a conversational scene between Aditya and Shraddha.

DIRECTION - Shaad Ali made Saathiya(2002) and Bunty aur Babli(2005) and after that took a complete nose-dive with flops like Jhoom Barabar Jhoom(2007) and Kill Dil(2014). No need to be surprised why that happened. Where Saathiya(2002) was penned by Mani Ratnam, Bunty aur Babli(2005) was penned by Aditya Chopra and Jaideep Sahni. I have been watching educational videos regarding film-making and it is difficult. I am being honest here, it is very difficult but when you are remaking something, you can clearly see where the problems were, right? Why repeat them scene by scene? The camera-work is bland and sometimes just off. Just off. Even the scenes with false tension are predictable. It should be unpredictable to the characters as well as the audience or else what is the point. Then comes the songs and the background score. It is everywhere like the Illuminati. Not a single shot has silence. Silence allows the characters, the set-up to settle in the eyes of the audience. The characters are jumping from one song to another, one frame to another so obviously the characters feel plastic and I couldn't even connect. People were leaving the hall before half-time and it is a movie with young, beautiful people who are in love. Bravo!

ACTING - Probably the worst performance yet by the leads and they have been in Aashiqui 2. So that's saying something. I am sure they are good actors but they were absolutely emotionless here. There was no chemistry, at all. On top of that there was the background score which was screaming, "FEEL THIS! FEEL THAT!". Arre! let the actors emote, please. Naseeruddin was great as usual. The actress who played Adi's sister-in-law had one scene and she nailed it. Leela Samson was bland too but I couldn't figure it whether it was because she was playing the character with Alzheimer's disease or not.

FINAL VERDICT - The only redeemable factor is how beautiful Shraddha Kapoor was looking in this movie. Go on judge me, see if I care. As far as the movie goes, wait for it to come on DVD or TV. If you want to sleep then you can probably go. You'll have a good sleep because of the 2 hour run-time. You can suffer a minor cardiac arrest due to the horrendous rendition of "Humma Humma", other than that it is a complete snooze fest. I am sure nobody from the Hindi Film Industry will be reading this but please, if you're spending so much then make a good movie because if you've nothing new to say then why say anything at all.

Dangal (2016)

Dangal (2016)
Director Mr. Nitesh Tiwari work is so brilliant that after few minutes, you just forget that you are watching film. You simply start witnessing the journey of Phogat's family. Makers are so confident that they have even given credit for story idea to Divya Rao, which reflects their honesty. She is not in writing team but gets her due credit. There are four writers, Director himself, Piyush Gupta, Shreyas Jain and Nikhil Mehrotra and their work is fantastic. Screenplay is seamless and very balanced with much needed freshness. Film starts with glimpse of Mahavir Singh Phogat's passion for wrestling, while watching and challenging another district level arrogant winner, while commentary comes over on them which is fresh. When that person gets defeated he says 'Tumne district level pehlawan ko haraya hai' Then Mahavir Singh replies ' Tension mat le, tum national level champion se hare ho'. Words may be a bit different but meaning was same. Which gives strong idea that what level of dialogues you are going to listen and they have maintained the graph. Dialogues just nourish your senses, inducing correct emotions. A simple scene where protagonist massages feet of his sleeping daughter, clearly reflects that he is just not a ruthless coach but a caring father too. Girls curse their father in front of their friend who is getting married, then that girl emotional words about her feeling towards their caring father is very cute, emotional and enough to make girls realize that what they are taking for granted. Best part of this film is it's continues ascending graph in every aspect. First half is cute, funny with subtle dose of emotions. Second half takes this graph to the horizon. Full of emotions, either it is of defeat, victory or relations. Another major plus point is the way they have shown wrestling. I dint know a bit of it but I enjoyed all wrestling matches like it was my favorite game and that is major chunk of film. Hats off to the team behind wresting choreography .Though you have basic idea of film happenings but still they kept you engrossed by presentation. Climax comes with a very strong message that one can train you but only you have to implement the techniques, which makes you true winner and enriches self confident. Performance makes you thunderstruck. Words can not justify or compliment, Amir Khan's performance as Mahavir Singh Phogat. Zaira Waseem as younger Geeta is brilliant. She is so good that when Fatima Sana Sheikh takes over as grown up Geeta, you miss younger one but soon Fatima proves that she has taken the graph far ahead. Same happens with younger Babita played by Suhani Bhatnagar and grown up by Sanya Malhotra. Skashi Tanwar as wife of Mahavir Singh is very good. Girish Kulkarni , who had played coach is superb, you do hate his character but love his performance. Actor, who played younger cousin of Geeta and even grown up one, both actors are cute and endearing. Kudos to casting director Mukesh Chhabra and team. Music by Pritam and lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya, are integral part of this film. Without any formulated track you just enjoy every song and your eyes get mois in one too.

"story not an extraordinary one but entertaining and specially dedicated to all laletan fans"

Positives- 1.)Direction- Vysakh directed amazingly with lots of fan moments added making it an splendid watch.

2.) Story- Not an extraordinary one but it can entertain you.

3.)Mohanlal- Outstanding performance from mohanlal. Each and every scenes of his acting were brilliant and his action sequences need lots of applauds (It has already got from audience).

4.)Aijaz (childhood character of mohanlal), Lal,Vinu Mohan,Bala and Jagapathi Babu.

5.) Bg score and music- Gopi sundar once again proved and title song was superb. Without title song this movie would have got affected badly and its an asset to this film. Keep it up Gopi Sundar!! 6.)Action sequences- One of the best action choreography and i have never seen like this type of actions in Indian movies. Peter Hein has choreographed properly without any flaws and all of them were jaw dropping and thrilling.

7.) Cinematography and editing- Cinematography was visual treat and editing works were good.

Negative- 1.)Suraj comedies- Was bit outdated and boring. Plus all his jokes were lame. Cant blame him completely because the script failed in those portions and not him.

2.)Screenplay- Not Worst but could have been better because i felt out of all screenplay didn't offer nothing new and bored non mohanlal fans at certain areas with clichés.

Is it a Must Watch Film? Yes, It is a must watch film and you will never see this type of films in malayalam because its very rare and with budget of 25cr they have utilised it properly. No Indian films till now could make such an excellent product with this type of budget. Usually if you check other lang movies you can see it exceeds 40 cr + to make pulimurgan type of films and that too it fails to reach the expectations. So special applauds to director for that.

Overall- Go for this flick and surely it will be first malayalam movie to reach 100cr worldwide. If you check in terms of story it may not be that great but overall its a well packaged one and its surely a complete treat to mohanlal fans!! Don't wait for its DVD because you will get its feel only in theatre. And its a visual treat to everyone.

My rating- 4/5 (Go for this Flick!! ) For more reviews on all language movie go to - Ridinbal movie reviews

Lion (2016)

Lion (2016)

only be good, but blows you away by how amazing it ends up being? That's LION, and if you've been watching films for several years like me thinking you've seen everything committed to cinema, it's a fantastic feeling to be proved wrong.

Let me explain to you exactly what I experienced while watching LION: Almost half of the film is in Hindi, which lends incredible authenticity to the story, not that BS where they have actors in which English is their second language speak English for the sake of sparing the American audience from reading subtitles (I'm looking at you, MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, and every other Hollywood movie ever made). In fact, the entire first act takes place in India, where about 40 minutes of the film rides on the shoulders of a first time child actor – played by the wonderful Sunny Pawar – and it's one of the best first acts I've seen in years. Think of it like the silent first act of Wall-E; it feels like it can be its own film, yet the filmmakers do a great job connecting the story once Dev Patel comes on screen.

On top of that, the filmmaking is impressive. The script is fantastic, the cinematography is lush, the soundtrack complements the film really nicely, and the pacing is on point where it rarely feels like it's dragging, despite the story taking place over the course of 25 years. Every actor in here is also terrific in their roles. As stated earlier, Sunny Pawar makes a compelling lead for the first third of the film. If Oscars were given to kid actors, he would have a damn good chance at winning one. For the last two thirds, Dev Patel more than carries the rest of the film, giving an emotionally naked performance worthy enough to top his role in SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. Finally, Rooney Mara, Nicole Kidman, and David Wenham are ace, despite all of them having limited screen time.

In a time where diversity is being talked about more in the film industry, LION makes a compelling case for having diversity in storytelling. It's not about a guy meeting his girlfriend's parents for the first time. It's not about a group of friends going in a cabin in the woods. It's not even about a guy/girl struggling with the death of his/her father/mother/son/daughter/dog. No, LION is a personal story unique to South Asians growing up in India, and it's refreshing and easily one of the best films the year has to offer. Don't dismiss this as yet another Oscar bait movie put out by the Weinstein Company – it probably is one. But the film is much more than that. With a distinct vision from director Garth Davis, LION offers an enthralling story that deserves to be seen by everyone.

Anuraga Karikkin Vellam (2016)

Anuraga Karikkin Vellam (2016)

Khalid Rahman is a fairly new name in the Malayalam cinema scene, but the way he has concocted his debut feature - a feel-good family drama - is an indication that the industry still has hope.

Raghu (Menon) is a no-nonsense cop who lives with his wife Suma (Sarath) and two children, Abhi (Ali) and his kid sister, in an upper middle-class house. Even though he is a great policeman, his behavior towards his family members, especially his wife, is entirely dominant. Suma, a disciplined homemaker, fears Raghu and takes care of him and caters to all his needs in the best way possible, while Raghu, to his discredit, neither pays attention to her needs nor appreciates her role in his life. Abhi's adolescent life is a story arc where he is trying to get rid of Eli (Vijayan), a girl whom he previously desired and successfully executed a one-time fling with. This forms the base of the story which moves on to narrate the family drama from chiefly Raghu and Abhi's perspectives. Things take a turn for good when Raghu one day sees his childhood sweetheart in the city.

Anuraga Karikkin Vellam succeeds in showcasing an average patriarchal family in Kerala. It marvelously depicts the characters involved and speaks volumes about their struggles and thoughts as they live life. Raghu is the husband next door who should be thankful to his family, but is instead worked up with his profession and a past episode of romance. Abhi is a relatable character who is unable to express to Eli about his inability to continue his relationship due to lack of or subdued interest. One can definitely relate to at least one of the characters in the story, which is why it will delight you. Use of humor and other story arcs involving Sreenath Bhasi and current king of comedy Soubin Shahir will further increase the delight one will reap from the narrative.

Naveen Bhaskar has taken a contemporary, non-novel foundation and etched a family drama into it where the primary element is chance. It is by chance that Raghu sees his sweetheart, which is what is the backbone of the film. Relationships are hard to maintain, and factors like profession, passion, and fleeting romance can affect them. It is up to the person to take pride and pleasure in small things. Of course, this preachiness is not conspicuous in the film; it's a highly entertaining comedy drama with a well-written and well-executed story.

Biju Menon is terrific in his character and has successfully landed in my list of best Malayalam actors of the 2010s decade. His command over his character is absolutely fantastic, and with that he creates an aura on-screen. Another actor speedily trying to enter my top actors' list is Asha Sarath. She is glamorous, flawless, and gracious with her character. Ali and other supporting roles are fine, too. Also stealing the limelight is newcomer Rajisha Vijayan with her explosive portrayal of a girlfriend. She nails it, really.

With a perfect background score and energetic tracks, the film is a total entertainer. This is only the second Malayalam film I watched with my parents and the experience was amazing. One of the best films of 2016 so far, just behind the brilliant Maheshinte Prathikaaram.

BOTTOM LINE: Khalid Rahman's Anuraga Karikkin Vellam is a well- cooked dish that is palatable for all. Worth the theater ticket price.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017)

xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017)

Just got back from a screening. All I can say is that the current 5.6 rating on IMDb is a damn joke. I really think people do not understand what a good action movie is anymore. We've been inundated with so many bloated, poorly paced comic book movies (that take themselves so seriously that they demand completely unnecessary 150 minute runtimes) that we've lost sight of what pure entertainment actually is. Hell, less than a month ago I saw a Star Wars movie that took 90 minutes to get to a decent action scene.

Return of Xander Cage is easily the best paced, big budget action film since Mad Max: Fury Road. Don't get me wrong, because it is an incredibly stupid film, but it's also damn entertaining from start to finish. For example, Donnie Yen is finally allowed to do what he does best in a Hollywood movie. It's not rocket science - let the guy kick some ass. The only negative that popped out to me was the awkward sexual innuendos near the beginning, which felt very out of place and a bit cringeworthy. Other than that, this is fantastic action trash that everyone should go out to support.

You get 3 action scenes within the opening 30 minutes, then a truckload of action afterward. Just as importantly, every single moment between the action is used to drive things forward. This movie does not waste time, so it safely avoids the "dull filler" that can drag these movies down. I really enjoyed the cast as well. It may have been a corporate suit who decided to cast a different actor from every country for the purposes of box office appeal, but it felt like these people had a blast making this movie and they seemed to have good chemistry together despite the fact that the character development was basic at best. Tony Jaa ditches his serious mug for a loony, dance-crazy role that had me in stitches. Nice to see "The Hound" from Game of Thrones here too.

The action is completely ridiculous, but it's certainly plentiful enough and has good enough quality to be satisfying. There are certain instances that overuse editing, but it's only an issue at certain points and I was not distracted by it for most of the runtime. It's certainly better than most of Paul Greengrass's titles.

I almost never say this about a big budget Hollywood action film, but I want a damn sequel!

A Nadirshah is one man who knows what people want when they go for the movies. In 2015, he gave us "Amar Akbar Anthony", a partial laugh riot with a social cause etched into it. This year, we have this comedy drama with the intrinsic essence of cinema in it.

Krishnan (Vishnu Unnikrishnan) is an enterprising young lad who aspires to star in films. This would not have been his life dream had his father Surendran (Siddique) not proclaimed in front of the entire village that he would make his son a film actor. It was Surendran's dream to follow the footsteps of his favorite actor, Malayalam star Jayan, and become a "Junior Jayan". However, when he realizes that cinema is not child's play and that it requires great struggle to become an actor, Surendran forcibly transfers his dream threads into Krishnan, a child who was born with a darker skin and an unattractive face. Both father and son know these facts, but still, deep inside, they hope that Krishnan will become a star one day. The story, thus, follows Krishnan's comical struggle, along with his bestie, auto-rickshaw driver Dasappan (Dharmajan Bolgatty), to act as a star, fall in love with a (relatively) beautiful girl, and...

The first thing one will notice in the film is the horrible makeup. But, you won't have much time to follow up on that because you will be soon overwhelmed by the trifling jokes and comic references that quickly turn to big ones and bring charm to the otherwise straightforward sequences. The uninterrupted flow of comedy, delivered without hesitance by Salim Kumar and Bolgatty, is what will seize your attention and advise you to lay back and grab that expensive bucket of popcorn. References of old classic Malayalam films and their scores will bring back the Malayali in you as you await more of the idiosyncrasies of the wicked characters who do not even mind joking about themselves. Take for instance the wildly popular classical song, 'Pramadavanam Veendum' from the 1990 blockbuster "His Highness Abdullah". Who would think of playing its prelude during a shot capturing the haplessness of students who are appearing for an examination? It's pure cinematic genius. The comedy, on which the entire first half and parts of the second depend on, looks mostly like spontaneous improvisation by the talented actors. Director Nadirshah should be praised for bringing out this spontaneity in his actors; we already know he is deft in it. Bibin George and Unnikrishnan do a decent job in writing and expanding their story.

The primary theme of the film is the condition of side actors and extras who are typecast under compulsion. If a certain actor has done an excellent job as a policeman, then he will be approached by casting directors for mostly similar roles. That is the bane of such actors who would like some diversity in their roles; and we even have some fragmentary examples like that of Kalabhavan Shajon, who did a great job in Jeethu Joseph's Drishyam (2013). Hence, he was cast in a similar role for enacting almost similar sequences in Priyadarshan's Oppam (2016). Krishnan experiences this industry practice and is saddened by it. The decrease in his level of self-esteem is apparent as he dresses up every morning, gets on his bicycle, and goes to shoot locations for roles which he think will aid in his ultimate dream.

While the audience will be enchanted with the comic happenings on- screen, they cannot ignore the stretched screenplay where the story actually moves with a snail's pace. It is only in the second half that it gathers steam and scrambles to move on with Krishnan as he comes in terms with his fate. Another diversion that the makers employ here is the inclusion of Prayaga Martin as Ann Mariya, a pretty woman who hopes to cajole Krishnan to get her a break in films. Talk about passengers of the same stairway to heaven.

Vishnu is absolutely perfect as the young man trying to get into films. His performance is carved beautifully by Nadirshah, which never goes overboard. He is well-supported by Bolgatty, Siddique, and Kumar, who all add into the humor, as well as the drama towards the end. Shout- out to Lijomol Jose for doing a sweet role yet again. It is mostly because of the actors and their performances that the film moves and succeeds in reaching the climax, which can be strongly termed a tearjerker.

All in all, the film has enough material to make you laugh and to make you cry. Nevertheless, sometime during the film, you will realize that you have seen it all before. And that is what essentially works against it. Do note the small reference made to 2016's best film so far - Dileesh Pothan's Maheshinte Prathikaram.

BOTTOM LINE: Nadirshah's "Kattappanayile Rithwik Roshan" is great comedy, but is let down by its familiar story and the ordinary social cause attached to it. It also gets the Bollywood actor's name wrong among other things. Wait for DVD or go for a late-night weekday show

The Quality of Satyan Anthikad films have languished evidently post 2010(Leaving aside an above average 'Oru Indian Pranayakadha') with his usual family dramas becoming too repetitive with seen-before characters, clichéd situations and extremely predictable narration.Still,I made up my mind to try this Satyan flick on the day of its release as it was the first movie release from Mollywood post the theater strike that lasted almost a month.

Surprisingly, the storyline of the film is blatantly similar to 2015 blockbuster '"Jacobinte Swargarajyam" that presented a care-free youth, played by Nivin Pauly resuscitating the lost glory of his family post financial crisis. The highly predictable screenplay of Jomonte Suviseshangal by Iqbal Kuttipuram is based upon the same one-line plot, with the narration being pretty ordinary on comparison with JSR.

The first half was rather interesting with few good comic sequences and rocking chemistry between the father-son duo of Dulquer and Mukesh being the best part of the narration. The treatment was similar to Satyan films in the past with the screenplay making profound focus on family relationships, utilizing natural humor to keep the viewers engaged with the narration.

The second half in contrary was a big mess, with the narration losing its grip as minutes passed by.The movie started traversing the most predictable paths with the similarity with JSR and other Satyan films adding to the boredom.

The way things got winded up in the end was presented very unconvincingly, the simple reason why the movie couldn't connect with the audience unlike JSR which was an inspirational affair in all means. The only saving grace in the slow-paced second half was few combination sequences between Dulquer and Mukesh that portrayed the intensity father-son relationship well on screen.

Performancewise,Dulquer Salman portrayed the title character Jomon pretty well with ample support from Mukesh who played the role of Jomon's father with required perfection. The chemistry between the two worked out very well and the light hearted sequences between the two stood out in an otherwise monotonous narration.Anupama Parameshwaran had nothing much to perform than to look good.Kakkamuttai fame Aishwarya Rajesh did her part well.Among others,Shivaji Guruvayur and Manobala were impressive.Jacob Gregory seemed as if he is still not out of the ABCD hangover.

Songs by Vidyasagar except for "Nokki Nokki" were disappointing and sub-standard from a composer of his caliber.Editing by K. Rajagopal and Cinematography by S.Kumar were fine.

Overall, Jomonte Suviseshangal is passable feel-good film that reminds that its hard time Satyan Anthikad tried something different from his clichéd family dramas.

Final Verdict::The apt title for the this movie could have been "Jomonte Swargarajyam" as nothing much have changed here from the 2015 Mollywood flick as far as the basic storyline is concerned. An addition to the list of clichéd family dramas from Satyan Anthikad, the 138 minutes long feature is a strictly average feel good flick that might turn satisfactory if you go with least of expectations.
